A new center for mechatronics

maxon founds MARS business unit in Giswil

With the BIKEDRIVE, maxon presented a powerful motor for e-bikes this year. Yet that was only the beginning: The new MARS business unit (maxon advanced robotics & systems) is dedicated exclusively to mechatronic drive systems. Exciting robotics products are to be expected.

maxon motor, is a worldwide leader in the manufacturing of DC motors, gearheads, and controllers. Now, the company is going one step further. In mid-November, maxon founded a business unit under the name MARS (Maxon Advanced Robotics & Systems), which focuses exclusively on the development and production of mechatronic drive systems. maxon motor CEO Eugen Elmiger will head the launch phase. Mr. Elmiger says: “We are bundling our years of know-how and our resources in mechatronic drive technology to continue offering our customers the best solutions in the future.” MARS combines components such as motor, gearhead, controller, and software to integrate the complete package in the relevant application.

Drive systems for e-bikes, robots, and exoskeletons
The MARS team is made up of 20 employees and is located in Giswil, only a few kilometers from the maxon headquarters in Sachseln. The newly renovated rooms also house the production, development, and sales for BIKEDRIVE - the e-bike motor that maxon presented to the public last spring. BIKEDRIVE is the first and for now the most important project of the new subsidiary MARS, which plans to sell several thousand units of this new drive annually. Other products include an innovative drive unit with a dual-clutch gearhead for use in robotics.
