The ocean covers about 70 % of the earth. 95% of it is uncharted. We only understand parts of it because of the challenges of exploring this extreme environment. Exploring the deep sea requires high-end solutions.


Our custom solutions for underwater drives are characterized by their compact construction, low weight and high efficiency. They are ideal for underwater robotic applications like ROVs (Remote Operated Vehicles) and AUVs (Autonomous Unmanned Vehicles).

Pressure tolerant underwater drive with maxon motor and gearhead, EC-i40 and GP42

maxon offers oil filled underwater drives with diameters from Ø16 mm to Ø42 mm. The core element is a motor-gear combination based on a brushed DC motor and planetary gearhead.


For corrosion protection the drive is encased in a polymer housing and sealed with two titanium flanges. The drive is connected with a compensator and the underwater drive is equipped with a connector for the control electronics.

Functional principle of pressure compensation

The drive unit is connected with the tube to the compensator. Inside the compensator, the water pressure will be transferred from the oil by a membrane. In other words, external pressure equals internal pressure leading to pressure tolerant drive systems.

Depending on water pressure or water depth the oil will be compressed to a certain volume. Additionally temperature fluctuations cause volume changes. Those volume changes are balanced with the oil reservoir inside the compensator by pressure and temperature changes.
